Ingredients

1 pound ground beef or turkey

1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-style for added flavor)

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (plus extra for topping)

1 large egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce

1 loaf of French bread or Italian bread

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking.

Prepare Meatballs: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef or turkey with the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly until they're well combined. Once mixed, shape the mixture into meatballs, each around 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.

Brown Meatballs: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a splash of olive oil. Carefully place the meatballs in the skillet and brown them for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally until they achieve a golden color on the outside. They don’t need to be cooked through, as they will finish cooking in the oven. Once browned, transfer the meatballs to a baking dish.

Add Marinara Sauce: Pour the marinara sauce evenly over the browned meatballs in the baking dish, ensuring they are fully submerged in the sauce. Set aside.

Prepare Garlic Bread: Take the loaf of bread and slice it in half lengthwise. In a small bowl, combine melted butter with garlic powder. Using a brush, generously coat the cut sides of the bread with the garlic butter mixture.

Assemble the Bake: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese generously over the meatballs and sauce in the baking dish. Place the garlic bread halves, cut-side up, next to the meatball bake in the same dish. This way, the bread can soak up the flavors while toasting.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil to trap the heat and moisture, then place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 20 minutes. After this time, carefully remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden, and the bread reaches your desired level of crispness.

Garnish and Serve: Once removed from the oven, sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the melted cheese for a pop of color. Serve the dish hot, encouraging everyone to use the cheesy garlic bread for scooping up the delicious meatballs and sauce.
