Ingredients

1 lb Italian sausage (choose mild or spicy based on your preference)

12 oz rotini or fusilli pasta

2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

1 cup ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 medium onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 green bell pepper, diced

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for a spicy kick)

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Cook the Pasta: Start by bringing a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the rotini or fusilli pasta and cook according to the package directions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Once cooked, drain the pasta and set it aside.

Brown the Sausage: In a large skillet, heat over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage, using a wooden spoon to break it apart into crumbles as it cooks. Sauté the sausage for about 5-7 minutes, or until it is evenly browned. Once done, remove the sausage from the skillet and drain any excess fat, leaving a small amount for flavor.

Sauté the Vegetables: Using the same skillet, add the diced onion, minced garlic, and diced green bell pepper. Sauté for about 4-5 minutes, or until the vegetables become tender and fragrant.

Combine Ingredients: Return the browned sausage to the skillet, stirring to combine. Add in the marinara sauce, drained pasta, ricotta cheese, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Mix everything together until the pasta is well-coated with the sauce.

Prepare for Baking: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish lightly. Pour the sausage and pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly to ensure a uniform cook.

Top with Cheese: Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of the casserole, followed by a layer of grated Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes. The casserole is ready when the cheese is bubbling and has turned a golden brown color.

Garnish and Serve: Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for about 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and flavor.

Enjoy the warmth and deliciousness of your hearty Cheesy Italian Sausage Pizza Casserole fresh out of the oven!
