Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 for optimal flavor)

2 cups broccoli florets (fresh or frozen)

1 cup uncooked rice (long grain or jasmine)

2 cups beef broth (or water)

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (plus extra for topping)

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

Optional garnish: sliced green onions for freshness

Instructions

Cook the Aromatics: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Then, incorporate the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Brown the Beef: Turn the heat up to medium-high and add the ground beef to the skillet. Use a spatula to break the beef into smaller pieces. Cook until the beef is browned and no longer pink, which should take about 5-7 minutes. If there’s a lot of excess fat, drain it away.

Season the Mixture: Stir in the soy sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. Mix everything well to ensure the beef is evenly coated with the seasonings.

Add Rice and Broth: Pour the uncooked rice and beef broth into the skillet. Stir the mixture well to evenly distribute the rice. Bring it to a rolling boil.

Simmer for Perfection: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low. Cover the skillet with a lid and allow it to simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the rice has fully cooked and absorbed most of the liquid. If using frozen broccoli, add it now to allow it to steam perfectly.

Incorporate the Broccoli: After the rice is cooked, gently fold in the broccoli florets (whether fresh or frozen). Let this cook for an additional 5 minutes until the broccoli is tender and vibrant.

Creamy Cheese Addition: Remove the skillet from heat and stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Mix until the cheese is fully melted and creates a creamy texture. Taste the dish and adjust seasoning as necessary.

Serve and Enjoy: Top the dish with extra shredded cheese, cover the skillet for a couple of minutes to allow the cheese to melt beautifully, then sprinkle with sliced green onions for a fresh finish. Serve immediately from the skillet while hot!
